"Before we would ask you to come in to give us items of what you own and serial numbers and so forth and that was time consuming."
The Sheriff's Department is taking part in a national program to make it much easier for people to register their valuables. Chief Federico Garza explains that 'Report It' is a free online service which allows citizens to record serial numbers and upload images of their jewelry, electronics and other valuables. For those who are concerned about the security of the website..
"Those folks that believe that 'well everybody's going to know what I have'...that's not so."
Chief Garza adds that he's even registered his items because it's a secure system that only you will have access to unless there is a burglary.
"Then we as a law enforcement agency will have the right to get into the system to verify what was stolen."
When it comes to the limit of items someone is able to register, Garza says if you can take a picture, you can upload it. As to where the stolen objects are usually found...
"We're checking pawn shops. We're checking the second hand stores where some of those things end up."
