Laredo police are still trying to locate the remaining missing animals stolen from a local pet store, in the Petland theft case that many by now are aware of.
The story appears to have stirred a local movement uniting animal rights activists tonight, including City officials in a candle light vigil.
About 100 people showed up for the vigil at Petland, the same location where Max “The Dancing Bird,” and three puppies were stolen earlier this week.
With the help of law enforcement, the Internet and members of the media, Max was found in Roma, Texas and also a puppy was returned after it was sold to a local family.
Animal rights activists say they’re fed up by crimes against animals and held this vigil as a result.
Joe Carvalho, of Petland, says, “We’re here to take a stand against crime and against anyone stealing pets. We need to make sure all the bad people know that Laredo doesn’t tolerate this. We love our pets, and it’s a violation.”
“Our purpose is to bring awareness to the community of the number of stolen pets and animals and the ability to engage law enforcement to get our stolen animals,” says Laura Hatton.
Police, deputies, Mayor Raul Salinas and Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar also showed up to the vigil to show their support.

Give me a break, if there was really a concern for animals then the shelter would not be overflowing with unwated pets. The vigil should have been for the neglected ones at the shelter.

@saywhat - The vigil was to bring awareness for all types of animal issues. ace, it wasn't stupid for those of us who care about animals, and aren't arrogant enough to think that human life is the only kind of life that matters.

...riciculous....and having the sheriff present (on campaign) and any other public figure wanting some "attention" makes it even more ridiculous. Kudos for the pet company for such a good PR job. ahhh Laredo......

riciculous? Wow, and some people can't even spell. Yep, much more deserving to have the attention go to the animals.

My fellow bloggers, I have come to find that if the word mayor is typed in your post it will not be posted. Freedom of speech? I think not.

The Mayor should of been praying for his marriage instead of some pets. Nice to see where his priorities are today.

Yes, maybe certain words, but it's also almost any comments that are well thought out and have a point that often don't make it through. It's like Pro 8 News thrives on idiotic postings from people who sound like they're 12. Just look around their blogs; it's a joke.

Wow! I'm shocked. My post came out even with the "M" word in it.

@Rob It is, indeed, because nothing that can be done about his marriage anymore. I actually wish he had been more involved when one of PD's finest left Chevy the K-9 to roast in the summer heat. But hey, it's Laredo and since only a few respect the lives of animals (obviously), it's no wonder this officer got away with barely a slap on the wrist.

My understanding that one of the dogs returned had already been sold to a family? what if this family was going to take of the pet better than the actual family that ws going to buy it? plus if all this political figures are supporting PETLAND do they support Puppy Mills and Animal Abuse? eif everyone were to do a little research they will know that petland is known for puppy mills.

"My understanding that one of the dogs returned had already been sold to a family? what if this family was going to take of the pet better than the actual family that ws going to buy it?" I haven't heard anything about that. I will say that a lot of ppl who call themselves animal lovers support animal torture by buying from pet stores. Pet stores = puppy mills. Political figures are even more ignorant, I think. However, to me this isn't about supporting Petland, but the missing pets (esp. Max, who has known only one permanent home all his life). Every pet I've ever had has been a former stray. I've never bought from a pet store or a breeder, and never will.

this vigil looks like it was more for neglected politicians than stolen pets, why can't we get a few Cuellars' and Salinas's abducted, and a Villarreal for good measure, but not luck there, petland is a puppy mill and Laredo is a corrupto-mill

Don't worry Casey, when there's a vigil for a missing kid, you'll be the first one notified. In the meantime want a babysitting job? Over in the barrio the comadres don't notice what their kids are up to anyway. If they get kidnapped, hit by a car etc. while playing in the street at 11 pm unsupervised, no one will know. You'll do just fine here Casey!
