Pro 8 News asked to leave premises of temporary Health and Human Services Office

By KGNS News

We sent a crew down to the temporary office of Health and Human Services today, to try and speak to employees there about what happened.
But we were promptly asked to leave the premises, and even told police would be called.
Our Carolina Garcia joins us with more on that.
Earlier today we went to the temporary office for the Texas Health and Human Services at 8511 Mcpherson to get some more information to bring our audience.
We were told we are not allowed to be there, and that if we didn't leave, they would call police.
We will have the full story for you at ten, plus we bring you the reaction from two Laredoans who said they saw this family wandering out in the streets before yesterday's incident.

I don't understand why they couldn't have given her the food stamps, and at least huomor this woman, so they could get those poor children out. The hostage situation could have been handle better. you have illegal aliens who reeive all the help in the world. They go to school and college here, and they receive food stamps and housing. Is there something wrong with this picture? They were American citzens, and thes impersonal workers couldn't help these poor children!!!!!

It's clear that TDHS is trying to cover up this case and make Rachel (R.I.P) look bad. Most of the employees there are so rude and unprofessional. Pro 8 News is a "local" media and of course not ready to cover this case.

The state workers DO have the right to deny benefits if you don't meet policy, and they do have the right to take 30 days to process an application.

what this boils down to is the poor customer service that is provided by state agencies. This clearly is a reflection of how the staff can be unprofessional. Not being able to provide a supervisor's name is unexcusable and DSHS should have a media communications section that can handle media outlets. I totally praise Pro 8 news for their work. Maybe some state offices should be revamped.

I QUESTION PRO8NEWS FOR NOT BEING TRUE TO THEIR VIEWERS & THE PEOPLE WHO PROVIDE THEM WITH RATINGS, WHY ARE YOU NOT SAYING WHAT THE SAN ANTONIO PAPER STATES & MSNBC AS WELL AS OTHER MEDIA?? WHY DO YOU NOT SAY THE WHOLE STORY & STATE THE REASON WHY SHE WAS DENIED!? THERE IS A LOT OF INFORMATION PRO8NEWS IS NOT GIVING THEIR AUDIENCE AND I THINK THAT IS UNFAIR FOR THE STATE EMPLOYEES & LAREDOINS IN GENERAL.

Not all DHS workers are bad but most have an attitude that they have the right to deny people for benefits and the like state they have the right to take 30 days to approve or deny a case. When in fact they can make Emergency approvals in case such as this one. There are some DHS workers who do not belong there and the State of Tx needs to conduct a serious overhaul and training for these Employees.

Completely agree with Reporting Prowess. It appears that the local news station was not prepared to properly cover such an event. They could have done a better job presenting the facts as they became known and used more professionalism.

Just goes to show the idiots they have working at the DHS offices. They lack proper customer service. What the guy should have said was " We are sorry for this tragic event. We are unable to release any details at this time. We are launching a full investigation to this matter. As soon as we have more details we will address the public" y ya.

Instead of harrassing these low-paid public servants who've just gone through a horrific time, why don't you try to be real journalists and cover the status of the childrens' conditions? The HHSC Commissioner released a statement last night. If you didn't receive it, it is because you are not a reliable news venue. As much as conspiracy theories might attract ignorant readership, your claims are baseless. HHSC processes requests as per the law. Texas actually leads the nation in our processing of said requests and they go out of their way to help people in need.

Remember that state government agencies are considered public entities and therefore everything is open record, even payroll. Pro 8 news, time to research. The information is there for the taking. Just ask the right questions that will get you the answers needed. Food for thought.

Perhaps reporting on the cause of this tragedy would be a better focus of news than the aftermath of such sad outcome.

This was handled incorrectly by the state. They should of had a blanket statement ready for the media informing them they could not comment due to the sensitive nature of the case. As a former state employee I understand their need for the proper PR person to handle the media, however this guy makes it look like they have something to hide.

After years of dealing with HHSC you'd think Pro 8 News would know that they are not allowed to speak to the media. Only Regional and State staff have that authority. Pro 8 news knows this.
