The Ambassador Event Center was packed with people tonight. Candidates running for office along with their supporters filled the center to hope their candidate got a top-spot on the democratic ballet. Sergio Mora\Ex-Democratic Chair: "All the candidates want to be first because there’s statistics that show people, if they don't know the candidates, they'll vote for the first one...or last one or the ballet. So it became sort of a tradition." Each candidate chose a playing card to determine their order on the ballet; some decided to have their children pick their card for them. But some surprising news came before the drawing began, when Democratic Chair Sergio Mora officially resigned from his position to run for the state board of education. "It's pretty much an open seat for democrats. I've always been very passionate about education and educational issues, I think there’s a lot of work to be done here." Mora said the incumbent did not seek re-election and he made his decision to run about two months ago. He waited to make it official on Friday, which was the deadline to file to run for an office. The Executive Committee of the Democratic Party, which is made up of precinct chairs, voted for Sylvia Palumbo to serve as the interim democratic chair until primaries are over, which is when the new candidate will immediately take office. Elections will be held May 29th, early voting will be from May 14th until the 25th.
