Game wardens were dispatched to Lake Casa Blanca after someone spotted a boat at the bottom of the lake.
"What we did is make sure that it wasn't an emergency situation,” said Game Warden Captain, David Murray.
Fortunately no one was in danger. In fact Capt. Murray said the boat just recently surfaced. "Come to find that the boat has been at the bottom of the lake for quite a number of years possibly dating as far back to 2006.
"It's in a secluded cove. It appeared to be under about 4 feet of water when the lake level was at normal conservation level or where it should be,” added Murray.
The recreational fishing boat was only made visible to the naked eye because of the drought we've experienced.
"If the lake hadn't gone down it would've remained there,” Murray said.
Pro 8 News spoke with boaters out on the lake who said they're surprised to hear about the sunken boat. With levels being rather low it's also creating hazards for them.
"It is shallow. It's pretty dangerous,” said Daniel Moreno, one of the boaters. “I almost got stuck and I'm in a boat that can run in less than a foot of water."
The game warden said they've seen more reports of boats running into stumps, sand bars and rocks. "Where they normally would be able to navigate safely, a lot of those places don't exist anymore,” Murray said.
"It went from 8 ft to 2 ft. I turned away from my fish finder and 2 seconds later I was in 2 feet of water,” added Moreno.
While water levels remain low, boaters are urged to use extreme caution out at Lake Casa Blanca. Murray said though the sunken boat doesn't appear to be stolen, they will be contacting the last registered owner in an effort to pinpoint why the boat was left behind in the first place.
