Suspect in Laredo Federal Credit Union robbery identified

By KGNS News

The FBI has released the name of the man arrested for the Laredo Federal Credit Union robbery last week, saying he was a former employee.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says the man arrested is 29-year-old Asael Cruz of Laredo, a former employee of the Laredo Federal Credit Union.

Authorities say an armed gunman confronted an employee at the bank as he exited the building last Friday.

The armed man allegedly threatened to kill the employee if he called police, then proceeded to bind his wrists and ankles taped his mouth shut and was later left in a storage room.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, the robber then guided a female employee to the vault and told her to begin filling the money into a plastic bag and threatened to kill her as well if she “did anything stupid."

She was left taped to a chair and Cruz allegedly left with the money in a truck stolen from one of the employees.

That truck was later found in the 800 block of Guatemozin along with two stacks of U.S. currency found in Laredo Credit Union bands.

Authorities have not confirmed just how much money was stolen.

Sources say it was well over $100,000.
