'The Help' Author In Laredo

The author of the widly popular novel 'The Help' was in the Gateway City to support the Casa De Misiericordia. It's the only 24 hour comprehensive shelter for victims of domestic violence. Kathryn Stockett's novel stayed on the New York Times best seller list for over 100 weeks, something the author never expected.
"No...No I'm surprised everyday and grateful."
The novel that was adapted into a movie received an Oscar nomination for best picture. Octavia Spencer won an Oscar for best supporting actress for her portrayal as a maid during the civil rights era in Jackson, Mississippi.
"I'm really excited for Octavia Spencer. She's really the person I had in mind as I was writing the character of Minny."
With the success of Stockett's novel, it's hard to believe this is her first book.
"I never set out to write the book for any gain--just to tell a story I felt hadn't been told."
The story she wanted to be told was similar to her own life experiences. Stockett was raised by her family's maid since her mother was not around. The author says just one person can make a difference and wants to send that message to anyone going through a rough time.
"The woman that made a difference in my life was Dimitri. So I just hope that people understand the power of love and what one person can do."
Along with Kathryn Stockett being the guest speaker tonight, there was also a silent auction with paintings done by the women from the shelter.
