Nuevo Laredo Goes Missing from Freeway Signs

Signs informing travelers on I-35 of the distance they are from Laredo can be seen along the freeway, but motorists traveling south have begun to notice a change over the past few weeks. Signs that proudly displayed the distance's carried both Laredo and Nuevo Laredo, but recently our sister city to the south has been blacked out. Ryan Bailey has more on this controversial decision.
It may look like this sign was vandalized with spray paint, but TX-DOT says they are the ones blacking out Nuevo Laredo in an effort to distance the two neighboring cities, and it started as a request from the chamber of commerce.
"Many of the problems that are attributed to Laredo Texas are in fact, derived from the fact that there are problems in Nuevo Laredo and other Mexican cities.”
“It's a decision Tx-DOT made and obviously we respect their decision. It's a family, not divided but united by a river and we keep that in mind as obviously they are going through some tough times.">>
The dilemma facing the city of Laredo now is how to distance themselves from the violence going on in Nuevo Laredo, but still show support for their sister city.
"Almost any family you talk to has relatives on the other side. People still do business with Nuevo Laredo, so we maintain that relationship but we want to clarify the geography."
"In the foreseeable future things will return to calm and that's why we have to work in a partnership."
The chamber says they've seen a drop not only in tourism but also concerns from students hoping to attend TAMIU or LCC.
"Always we seem to get the same kind of response from families out of town, is it safe? We hear there are shootings in the streets and so we are trying to dispel that image."
"They honestly don't know it’s a different country and we unfortunately inherited that image."

TX-DOT says they started blacking out the signs around a month ago and that new signage is on the way. They expect to have the news signs up in about a month.

Mexican leaders say soldiers, who had just been deployed to Nuevo Laredo, didn't know the area, got lost" AND NOT TOLD HOW TO GET THERE? LOST with Hiway signs above?? or were they escaping Mexico? Mexico President not in control. President won't inform on TV to people.

Well Laredo aint far behind from Nvo.laredo its gets worse and worse as days go by. They might as well black out Laredo to. Why you ask? Laredo is da pipeline dukie runs through everything comes thru der drugs,illegals,zetas dey come and go as they please. Washington needs to look at this matter seriously and start from top and get new leadership for that city. I've lived in Laredo for so long i forgot there's LIFE outside of hell.I just feel sorry for people that r stuck on the dream of getting out of that place i only got one thing to say to them dont quit and dont look back...Its going to get worse...one thing to P.D its not hard finding a drug dealer just look at what they drive.They r sloppy flashy c'mon. they just turn thier heads the other way toward someone that works for a living. Laredo is just weird like that i guess ah i really dont care im out and never goin back there

....Laredo..is not Nuevo Laredo,YOU!! shouldn't even consider us in a same sentence,with that state,by far call us.....blood,that country gave my best friend aids from a girl he never saw again....we shouldn't be affiliated.

I moved to Laredo 9 years ago....I have family in Austin and in the Corpus Christi areas. When I do visit them, the first thing I hear is "how is the violence in Laredo. Has it gone down?" I ask them what violence? They reply, "the shootings with the drug war?" I inform them that those shootings are in Nuevo Laredo, which is in Mexico which is in another country south of the Rio Grande River. They then say, "well the News said it was in Laredo." So either they just do not understand the geography, or just not informed properly.

The (chamber and TxDot) people covering up the signs leading the charge in the "Laredogate" coverup are intent on erasing geography. This bunch of bozos pushing for this geographical erasure probably think the shadow made by their thumbs is an eclipse too.

If only the "#1 News Station in Laredo" would stop "Covering the Border" with their BS. The Typical news broadcast has one or two stories about Laredo and four to five stories about Nuevo Laredo/Mexico violence. And people wonder why Laredo has a bad image. It is very annoying. That is why I watch the other "Local News" and KSAT.
