Just when reports of deadly incidents in our sister city seem to be on the raise.
Thousands of Customs and Border Patrol agents stand ready as the first line of defense to our border.
Acting Deputy Chief William Jenkins with the Border Patrol in the Laredo sector said, "For Laredo sector you're talking about 1900 law enforcement officers that alone just the Border Patrol. We work with all our other law enforcement buddies here. we got the sheriff's office, LPD, FBI, ATF, cbp port of entry."
Gunfire and other explosions can sometimes frequently be heard here in Laredo but it all comes from the constant battle between drug cartels and Mexican Military taking place in Nuevo Laredo.
While the gun fire continues many Laredoans wonder just how safe is our border for those living in the U.S. side?
Jenkins, "We have a strong law enforcement presence here in the U.S. the Border Patrol to the intelligence community that everybody works together to make sure that we don't have that border violence reach across us yet. Hopefully we form that barrier from them not to come into our side here."
Reinforcing the border with more officers from different agencies is part of the effort of those whose mission is to keep the border safe.
Never underestimating any situation that could impose a danger. A special Agent with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Jerry Robinette said that there is no doubt there are things that are happening around us south of the border that concerns us.
Just as crucial as it is for law enforcement agencies to stand together these agents say working with the Mexican authorities is a must.
Jenkins stated, "We have an International liaison unit that will immediately contact the Mexican authorities and give them exactly the location of the disturbance on their side to see if their are already moving their law enforcement in that position."
Acting Deputy Chief William Jenkins says that while our border may be seeing a spike in violence that can be heard in Laredo his agents are more vigilant than ever. He said,
"That's correct just like they hear it, so do my agent out in the field as as soon as they hear it they call us and we go everybody on our guard to notice hey we've got an intrusion."
