They've created a community garden, fixed up a nature trail and now they hope to create an environmentally friendly kitchen and education center for families to use. Now that the Laredo Nature Center is growing our Antonia Mejia headed out to get the details and has the story.
It's a community oriented idea these individuals want to make a reality. Alli Hrncir, a representative of the Laredo Nature Center , comments "The ideal goal for the Laredo Nature Center is to teach people, children, adults, [that it's] everyone's personal responsibility [to] protect the environment. It's their job. It's all of our job[s]." Alli Hrncir is one of the main advocates for this project and has been behind it for some time. She hopes that everyone can engage in it as well. Hrncir adds " We really want people to come use the community gardens as an avenue to learn about organic growing. Learn about organic conservation while your out here." She shows us into the main public ktichen of this formerly plantation home renovated for these altruistic purposes. Alli adds that city residents will be able to take advantage of this resource in the effort of promoting a healthy life. "They can utilize the tools that we teach them through our cooking classes or through whatever resources we provide them to make smarter choices in their lifestyle and learn to respect nature." This project continues to be a work in progress but they hope to get permits as well as grants that will help cover costs for the expenses. Supporters for this prospective nature center add that they always welcome any help because ultimately it becomes a benefit for Laredo. "In the end, everything ties in together because it's teaching our community that we are each other's resources."
The Laredo Nature Center now has the community garden open for everyone to use. As for the community education center and kitchen, they hope to begin construction in four to six months once permits and grants have been awarded.
