Suspect Claims Police Brutality

By KGNS News

Internal Affairs was investigating claims that an officer with the Laredo Police Department allegedly used excessive force on a 50-year-old man.

It happened at 11:30 Sunday morning. Christina Sotelo said her 50-year-old brother Rolando Cruz Soliz went to the store to buy a beer. A police officer in the area saw Soliz carrying a beer bottle and the police officer conducted a routine stop.

Public Information Officer Joe Baeza said, "apparently it ended with the officer having a struggle with the suspect the person was refusing to be detained and identified and the officer got into a physical confrontation with the suspect and it got pretty serious."

Rolando Soliz's sister ,Mitilda Christina, says, "my brother Rolando is undergoing a four hour surgery"

"Once the person was arrested the suspect did tell the officers he was injured as a result to the arrest they went ahead and did give him medical attention and take him to the local hospital," says Baeza.

Sotelo claims police had no reason to arrest him in the first place but police did find drugs on Soliz.

Joe Baeza says, "the person is facing charges of assault on a public servant resisting arrest possession of a controlled substance he had pills of morphine."

Sotelo had this to say: “They are here to protect and to serve not to treat individuals like dogs."

Soliz has been arrested seventeen times and internal affairs is still conducting an investigation.

Soliz's sister says as a result to the beating Rolando Soliz will have to have his mouth wired shut.
