15th Annual Fishing Derby

By KGNS News

"Because of the economy, a lot of people have a hard time going out of town and spending a lot of money so they want to stay in town so they're looking for events and we try to give them something that not only gears around the kids, but the family and adults."
Eddie Millan with the city parks and leisure says this is a great alternative and says Lake Casa Blanca is a hidden jewel that people forget about.
"We just want to show the community that there's a lot of things to do in Laredo. They just gotta open their eyes a little bit."
That's exactly what the chair of the 15th annual fishing derby says. He wants families to enjoy the lake and start a new family tradition.
"We want the kids to catch a fish. Get hooked on fishing instead of drugs."
For many families, the derby marked the first time bringing their kids to fish. And for others, this is something they look forward to every year.
"They're here before daylight because they want their spot that they've fished from for years."
We spoke to one family who had four generations at the lake. One of the girls seemed to have the fish biting.
"I caught a fish."
Benavidez seemed to think the recent rainfall may have added to the events success.
"Three days ago, the lake was about five or six feet lower and the shoreline was half a mile from here."
