When all else fails, ham radio

By Ray Gomez

Ham radio operators showed off their emergency communications capabilities today.
Ham is slang for an amateur radio operator.
These operators provide critical communications in emergencies including California wildfires, Oregon and Michigan storms, tornadoes, and other events world wide.
And during Hurricane Katrina, ham operators were often the only way people could communicate.
When there's trouble volunteer "hams" are often the first to provide critical information and communication.
Laredoans had a chance to meet and talk with ham operators and see for themselves what amateur radio services are all about.
