The Student Activity Center was the site for the 2nd annual UISD 'Let's Move for Scholars' run/walk.
Despite the overcast skies, the participants of all ages were in high-spirits enjoying the fund raising event that benefits certain UISD scholarship recipients. The event was a 5k run or walk that also included a fun Zumba workout at the end.
We spoke to the female and male division winners, who not only train together, but are siblings too.
Abby Madrigal, who won the female division with a time of 20:24, said "Cross country season is over, so I was training for track. I was really sore, so I was nervous. There was a lot of competition." Her brother, Ismael Madrigal, winner of the male division with a time of 16:45, said “"Overall, it was a good race. I had some competition, there were some good runners out there, but it was all to the end. It matters how you finish.”
Participants also enjoyed the free blood and glucose checks, flu shots, door prizes and trophies for the winners. About 450 to 500 people participated, and about $10,000-$12,000 was raised for the fundraiser. Organizers thank all the supporters of the event who contributed to the day's success.
