U.S. Consulate in Monterrey attacked

By Ray Gomez

The violence in Mexico spread to Monterrey as gunfire was aimed at the U.S. consulate.
A spokeswoman for Mexico’s attorney general's office says shell casings were found outside the consulate... But there are no witnesses and no one is in custody.
The spokeswoman could not provide any further details but Mexican media reports that one man opened fire on the consulate and another man threw a grenade that failed to explode.
"El Universal" newspaper, citing a U.S. Embassy statement, reports the attack happened before dawn on Sunday.
The U.S. consulate is closed today because of Columbus Day but security has been increased outside the building.
