Paisanos pack bridges on return to U.S.

By Ray Gomez

After visiting families in Mexico for the holidays, Paisanos are making their way back to the United States
According to Customs and Border Protection, this weekend was the busiest processing traffic.
" We anticipated this traffic, its how it would be. Specially the weekend before school starts."

Lines miles long waiting to be processed.
That was the scene throughout the weekend at the International Bridges in Laredo.
According to CBP more than 65 thousand vehicles coming into the United States were processed.

"We have a peak in the volume of people crossings in all of our locations."
"Long lines were the number one priority for CBP field operations. More than 19 thousand Paisanos made their way into the United States by buses.”

But CBP encountered a big problem on Friday at the Columbia Bridge.
Mexican officials closed their lanes at midnight...even though there was an agreement to stay open for the holiday season.
"We have always been our agreement every year, during Paisano season. That we will stay open to process and the number of people that are on that bridge."

The lines of Paisanos continued throughout the weekend keeping CBP busy around the clock.
One woman says her process crossing the border was easy now than going into Mexico on the holidays.

" Fue mas facil el proceso que de ida. Fueron bastantes horas."

She says it took her more than 12 hours to get into Mexico and only two hours to come into the United States.
Meanwhile CBP says they have extra staff to make sure the process is smoother.
CBP says they have their additional four lanes open at bridge number two.
They also brought additional officers from other sectors to help out during the Paisano travel season.
