By Cynthia Cano

With so many businesses having a tough time in this economy, it is rare to see one thats growing. But this time of year is one for flowers. And as our Annette Garcia shows us, Customs and Border Protection is seeing to it that the flower industry stays strong.’
“ ‘It’s very important that we are thorough in our inspections to make sure these pests dont hitchike their way into our country.’ For people like David Gonzalez and Silvia de la Pena, bugs mean business. Any pesky weevle or worm sneaking across the border on blueberry or rose could be devastating for American horticulture. As David Gonzalez, Chief Agriculture Specialist says, ‘the economic losses associated with pest infestations is something that we need to keep a careful watch on because again historically pest introduced from foreign countries cause alot of damage.’ Annette: ‘dozens of flowers will be inspected here at the colombia solidarity bridge--it is the only one to have this kind of indoor facility.’ Despite a wilting economy, the valentine flower business is blooming. Of the 500 million stems traveling on international bridges between the first of January and 14th of February, over 27 million are expected to make the trip right through Laredo. The Laredo port is the ranked second in the nation when it comes to importing the valentine favorites. This year officials are expecting to process more than ever. ‘What we are looking out for here is any live insect feeding on the flower,’ says Gonzalez. Creature conversations aren't taken lightly. Each truck carries 60 to 90 thousand dollars in domestic value. By the time that special sweetheart goes out to store, the flower could be worth four times its amount, and the livelihood of an american florist. ‘They could cause widespread damage—damage that would equal economic losses for farmers.’ Annette Garcia, Pro 8 News.” Two percent of the truck load will go through a rigourous inspecition that can take up to 30 minutes. Shipments with pests will be held until the pest is identified. Those found not to be dangerous for U.S. Agriculture will be sent on their way to flower shops.
