Sheriff's Department has seized over five tons of marijuana so far this year

By Ray Gomez

The Sheriff's Department Crimestoppers unit has seized 10,000 pounds of marijuana in three months.

According to the department this is the biggest number of seizures they have seen.

"The sheriff's main goal is to keep the streets safe for our children. Being very proactive and given the necessary tools to obtain that is a main priority."

And that is what they have done in the past three months, seizing marijuana with a street value of 16.1 million dollars.

Recently deputies have seen a new trend with drug traffickers.

"What we call suicide loads. Having the bundles in plain view within the vehicles...driving along the vehicle you could probably see the bundles."

That was the case on Monday night where three people were arrested.

They were unloading the drugs of a tractor-trailer into a mini-van.

There were around 1000 pounds of marijuana.

Also the department has seen an increase on violence against them.

"They are going to extreme measures to abscond from officers using vehicles trying to get them off roadway assaulting police officers."

That also happened Monday night in another case, where a 21 year old led them to a chase from Rio Bravo into Zaragoza Street.

There the man had 250 pounds of marijuana in plain view inside his vehicle.

According to Crimestoppers they have also seized us currency.

"We've also put a dent in their money laundering to confiscate over a million dollars taking their cash always hurts."

"As a result of the recent drug busts the Crimestoppers unit has arrested 32 people in two months."

"Crimestoppers is the best tool the community has they remain anonymous protected by the law."
