Mary Ethel Novoa is now headed to court on charges stemming from an investigation that began back in 2007.
Its been over two years since the alleged activity happened but now an indictment being released by the Webb County District Clerk, details the offenses of at least one of the employees of the tax assessor collectors office.
“Could you tell us there’s an indictment? No, no. Could you tell us where Miss Barrera is? I don’t know.”
Mary Ethel Novoa, not commenting on questions about alleged activity in her office, and it seemed like business as normal at the Webb County Tax Assessor Collectors office, while an office at the same building releases details of an indictment against Deputy Chief Mary Ethel Novoa.
District clerk's released a copy of the indictment assigned to the 406th court Thursday.
In it are details of the alleged activity of at least one of the Tax Assessor-Collector employees who they say was involved in illegal gambling.
According to the indictment, Novoa, in combination with two or more other persons did commit the class a misdemeanor offense of gambling promotion.
It goes on to say that she did then and there knowingly for gain become the custodian of a thing of value, in this case money for raffle tickets. The offenses listed: engaging in organized criminal activity, a state jail felony and gambling promotions.
With no comment from Novoa, we tried asking County Tax Assessor Collector Patricia Barrera for a comment. “I don’t know if she'll be back today or tomorrow.”
She wasn't available either.
The charges all stem from an investigation that also included Tax Assessor Collector Patricia Barrera. Barrera has been accused of selling raffle tickets during business hours to fund her previous election campaign.
The Attorney General has been investigating the case.
