Legislative bills aim to help children of abuse

By Ray Gomez

Two legislative bills are now on the governor's desk that would help investigate and prosecute crimes against children.
In Texas there are cases of child abuse that take as long as six years to prosecute and the delays will make it difficult for the child to heal.
One bill will give the right to a speedy trial.
The second bill prohibits the defendant to have direct contact with the alleged victim as a condition of bond.
According to the children's advocacy center these bills will make it easier for law enforcement to prosecute.
Sylvia Bruni - Executive Director
" That legislation will make it a bit easier for them to be able to in cases were there is obvious abuse to bring the child out of the home."
In the month of June the Childrens Advocacy Center has assisted 43 children in Webb County.
That is double the numbers from last year.
