HIV Screening in Downtown Laredo

By Cynthia Cano

Every 9 and a half minutes, someone in the U.S. is infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Today, the South Texas Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse gave free HIV screenings at Jarvis Plaza. It was all part of national HIV testing day--an annual campaign targeting millions of at-risk people nationwide. Members of STCADA were on hand to make a proclamation before the testing began. Representatives from the city including Councilman Mike Garza and Sheriff Martin Cuellar were also present to say a few words about the importance of creating HIV awareness. In Webb County last year, the infection rate increased 28 percent compared to the two previous years.
