Laredo Morning Times now charging for online content

By Ray Gomez

Starting Wednesday, July 1st the Laredo Morning Times will begin charging for services they have offered free in the past.
Access to the news stories on their website will no longer be available unless you pay to be a subscriber.
Bill green - Publisher, Laredo Morning Times
"The news headlines will be there but if you want to click through and get the full story you either have to be a copy subscriber, which we call triple gold."
"Triple gold subscribers get the hard-copy, text, and e-edition. But for whatever reason if you don't want to receive the actual paper itself you can get LMT's double gold package that gets you everything your triple gold subscribers get minus the hard-copy."
The triple gold package will run $3 a week.
And the double gold is $1 week.
Publisher for the Laredo Morning Times, Bill Green, says the change comes as a result to the hard economic times.
"We invest a lot in news gathering, editing, presenting the news, print and on-line, and there's a value in that. It's worth something."
But some people think this big change will only benefit Laredo Morning Times and not their customers.
Ezequiel de Leon - Saw It Coming
"I think it's just a sign of the times. That's what we're faced with today and businesses have to start charging for more things. I'd rather have it free obviously."
Hans Nunemaker - Doesn't like the change
"The truth of the matter is you have to pay for the paper in person so why shouldn't you have to pay for it on the web? We're used to things being free on the web so we're spoiled probably."
"I say for a $1a week you can have everything you had all along and what you think you've been getting for free you can get it now for $1 a week and I think that's fair."
And faithful paper readers know this has to be done.
Chuck Owen - favor of change
"They've got to do it to stay alive and we want LMT to be here tomorrow."
