The Laredo Independent School District has selected its new Superintendent and board members say he's going to take the city by storm.
The finalist is being called an innovative leader in education but will it be enough to straighten out problems within the school district.
Dr. Marcus Nelson is a native of San Antonio and is currently the associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction for Judson ISD.
And while he admits taking over LISD is a very different task, he says he has all the tools needed to make each student shine.
“I believe kids deserve very courageous leadership and I believe that you have to have very serious fierce education about what it's goint to take to make sure we educate every child,” says Nelson.
Those are the words of Dr. Marcus Nelson, chosen unanimously by board of trustees to lead Laredo ISD.
Nelson is a long-time educator and currently an associate superintendent in San Antonio.
He is even known for his motivational speeches, many of which he even shared on his own teen radio show.
“He comes from a very humble beginning. From a very poor environment he made it to the top and he was still very young. He’s ready to provide that if i can make it you can make it,” said Mina Montes, and LISD board member.
The excitement share even comes as a surprise to some.
It's interesting the board is very excited, the staff is excited, and the new superintendent is excited and we've never had this before,” added board President Jose Valdez.
The man who will soon take over this office and district faces big challenges, including straightening out a high school on the verge of being taken over by the state.
Still Nelson says he's prepared for every challenge and plans on making sure each child is prepared to live their dreams.
“I’m trying to bring a serious knowledge base and focus for the future of Laredo ISD.”
Board member John Peter Montalvo is happy with their decision.
“We need people that do have experience and that do have the know how and the energy to come and pick up our district. We're down very, very low and we know he's the man for our help.”
Only time will tell just how long it will take the new Superintendent to make an impact on the district but board members say they're sure he will make a difference on day one.
For now, LISD must wait at least 21 days to officially hire Nelson.
