More families turning to federal aid in hard economic times

By Ray Gomez

The hardships of an economic downturn are hitting home with many families here in Laredo. More and more are turning to federal assistance to make ends meet.

Our local food stamp office has seen an increase in people looking for help.

Despite tough the economy, families continue to pass through check stands at local grocery stores, many relying on assistance from food stamps to keep food on the table.

Statistics show more than 63 thousand people in Webb County are using the program, with more than 3 thousand participants coming from Zapata County.

A representative for Health And Human Services says he has seen many different people applying for help.

"Of course the economy is a factor as we see some people that realize they need some extra help. So they come to our offices. So it's a multiple array of factors, but we are seeing a significant number."

“Grocery managers say 1 in 9 in the state of Texas are asking for food stamp assistance. But officials say vendors will make sure to keep their shelves stocked for everyone.”

The number of food stamp participants has increased over 5 thousand people since last year.

Health and Human Services say numbers are up state wide because of an easier application process.

"When you are down and out you know the government is here to help and this is one of those ways we can help people get back on their feet."

The addition of new employees has helped applications go through faster and provided more people with the food stamp service.
