Mother of missing girl speaks about her daughter and the "person of interest"

By Ray Gomez

We are learning more on the identity of the person of interest in the case of a missing 12-year-old girl.

Police surveillance video taken from a convenience store shows 29 year old Herman Hernandez Canales.

"This was dated on September 21st, which is a day before she went missing."

Police are hoping this video will lead them to him.

Karla's mother had been renting a room to canales about two months. Another man also rents a room in the house.

Karla's mother says canales visited with them often.

According to the mom, canales had already told her he loved her daughter, but she says he is a drug addict, and according to police, is an undocumented immigrant.

"He was deported back in 2004 from the state of California. Right now we are gathering that information and moving forward."

That information has Karla’s mother worried; she says Karla would never leave with him.

The mother is still in shock and has no clue what happened to Karla, but police are convinced that they are not in Mexico.

"We don't have anything confirming us that he crossed into Mexico. We believe highly that he is still here in Laredo."

In the meantime both Karla’s mother and authorities are following every lead in hopes of Karla’s safe return.

Police are asking for the community's help. If you know the whereabouts of Herman Hernandez Canales you are asked to call police at 795-2800, or 727-TIPS.
