County needs funds to bring FEMA trailers to Laredo

By Ray Gomez

FEMA trailers may soon be up for grabs in Laredo; a presentation was made today before of County Commissioners to start the process.

The Laredo Development Foundation has received more than 3,200 calls of people wanting to get their hands on a FEMA trailer once utilized by Hurricane Ike victims.

At this moment Webb County and the Laredo Development Foundation need to raise funds in order to bring these trailers to Laredo:

"Our budget is about five hundred per home to get it set up, we could do 10 to 12 homes.”

There are certain qualifications in order to get one of these trailers. Potential owners need to own or have land outside of the city limits and the property needs to have the proper hook ups for the trailer.

"The need is definitely there. We just have to coordinate it properly for the right information to go out."

"We will be having orientations sessions out in the community centers time will be announced. But will be the week of November 17th."

The trailers are fully furnished and air conditioned, but there has been a concern of whether or not these trailer pose any type of health hazard:

"These trailer are lightly used so they were part of the process. There were two generations of trailers, these are not the Katrina trailers."

"That's been already clarified that these trailers are safe and that is the reason they were put out there."

The number of trailers the foundation will be able obtain will depend on the amount of money they are able to raise.

They hope to get these trailers before the holiday's arrive.
