A four-year-old boy is in the hospital for something his mother says could have been avoided if the school nurse would have done her job correctly. Now she’s speaking out about the incident in hopes that other parents and school officials are paying attention.

Only days after Trick-or-Treating with his family, Angel Carillo is now in a Laredo hospital, thanks to what his mother describes as poor judgment by his elementary school nurse:

“I told him to walk up to me. He couldn’t walk, so I had to carry him all the way from school; two or three blocks away from school.”

Marissa Carrillo arrived at Alma Pierce Elementary at three o’ clock Monday to pick her son up from school, and found him extremely pale, his fingertips turning purple.

Administrators told Carillo her son had been feeling sick, and having trouble breathing. He was taken to the school nurse around two in the afternoon. She took his temperature and said he was fine, but Angel was really having an asthma attack, and was sent back to class. Gasping for air where he waited for one hour, for mom to arrive.

He was taken to the doctor, who in turn said he needed to be admitted to the hospital immediately:

“They should have called me right then and there his medical history says he has asthma they would have called me I would have been there.”

“Mrs. Carrillo says the incident could have been avoided and she wonders just how many other students have been put in the same situation.”

“I can’t believe it. I can’t believe it. That’s why they have nurses at school to prevent all this.”

“He didn’t have to be here in the hospital, he didn’t have to.”

Mrs. Carillo says doctors are asking Angel to stay in the hospital one more day because his oxygen levels are not back to normal yet.

“Nurses at LISD are trained professionals who deeply care about all their students.

Patricia Keck, Director of Health Services, will be looking into the situation to make sure all policies and procedures were followed.”
