Effort to bring Laredo soldiers home in time for the holidays

By Ray Gomez

It's a monumental task, especially given the time frame, but a group of community leaders is pushing to get a large group of Laredo soldiers home for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.

To do so, the group, spurred on by Sheriff Martin Cuellar and Mayor Raul Salinas, has about six days to raise $50,000. That money will go towards chartering an airplane, preparing a huge homecoming and fiesta for the troops from Bravo company.

Ninety-six soldiers from the Laredo area are stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso. They will soon leave for the front lines in Iraq:

“As our soldiers deploy to Iraq for one year, anniversaries, birthdays and even births will happen and we want our brothers and sisters in the armed forces to have a nice weekend to spend with their families.”

If you'd like to help out, you can call Guerra Communications with your donation. The number there is 725-9393.

Several of the radio stations will also have a radio-thon all day Monday, November 16th.

Donations will also be taken during a helmet brigade outside the studios.
