Webb County Jail full; Inmates being sent elsewhere

By Ray Gomez

Today at Commissioners Court, the Jail Commander asked for approval to house inmates in other counties. The jail is overcrowdedwhich is an everyday problem for the Jail Commander. He says it's time for a new jail.

Commissioners approved an inter local cooperative agreement between Webb County, Zapata County and Dimmit County to house Webb County inmates at their facilities. The term of the agreement started October 1, until September 30th of 2010. Webb County will pay 40 dollars per inmate per day to be housed in Zapata County and 39 dollars to be housed in Dimmit County. According to the jail commander Pepe Salinas, they have spent thousands of dollars in repairs at the jail. For example in order to pass their yearly inspection, the jail had to fix their elevators. Meanwhile Jail Commander Salinas says it's time for a new jail. They will start working on a proposal for the Commissioners to see what can be done. Sheriff Martin Cuellar has already started looking for grants to help pay for the new facility.
