Sheriff Martin Cuellar unveiled brand new uniforms and patrol units for the department.

"Everybody is excited they've been waiting for this time. We are trying to have a better environment and more professional."

According to Sheriff Martin Cuellar, several deputies approached him wanting to change the uniforms. They formed a committee and deputies participated by choosing colors and material.

Another thing on the deputies’ wish list: new patrol units.

This year the Sheriff's Department will receive 23 brand new cars. All bought with different grants.

In addition the county paid for two of those vehicles, units with a totally different look.

"The black and white comes from DPS and it’s really an old tradition."

The units are equipped with the latest technology a deputy can ask for.

Some units are also equipped with license plate readers, a crucial tool for law enforcement along the border.

According to Sheriff Cuellar, they have added a new unit that focuses on the highways.

That idea came from a former DPS trooper, and they honored him by placing his initials on three units.

"Thanks, Sheriff Martin Cuellar, for the recognition he is giving my late husband Hector Rodriguez Junior. Thank you very much."

It was an emotional dedication that marks a new beginning for the Sheriff's Department.

According to Sheriff Martin Cuellar they will soon receive the remaining 12 patrol units.

He says they were in need of new units as they have already spent thousands of dollars repairing the old ones.
