It's an event meant to promote safe and responsible teen driving and, today, hundreds of people came together to participate--showing they're hearing the message loud and clear. Our Annette Garcia reports.
"Streets of downtown Laredo closed off for a 5K run aimed at helping promote safe teen driving, while remembering those who have lost their lives in accidents. The event, only in its second year, has received overwhelming support from people of all ages. 'It's outstanding. It's outstanding for the reason that there's a lot of kids. We get them off the streets doing something good," says Jose Garcia, a participant in the run. 'It feels really good. I feel a lot of pride in my city,' says Aleisha Vijan, 1st place winner in the run. (Annette:) 'About 1,000 people took part in the race today. Many of them friends and family of Mercurio Martinez IV.' 'It just means a lot to our family.' 'We go way back with the family--very good friends.' Mercurio Martinez IV died in a car accident over two years ago. The crowds of people participating brought his grandfather to tears. 'There are not enough words to thank everyone for the kind of participation and the support,' says Mercurio Martinez Jr. 'It's humbling to say the least, and it's emotional. UISD, LISD, St. Aug, United Day; they're all here--so it's touching,' says Martinez. The Martinez family hopes other families will also be remembered, and an important lesson be taught. 'It's a good tribute to those families who have lost a loved one such as ourselves. That's a big issue. Teens really need to be aware of what they're doing in the drivers' seat,' he adds. Annette Garcia, Pro 8 News."
Proceeds from today's run will be combined with other contributions to be used for scholarships. They will be awarded in the memory of Mercurio Martinez IV at a later date.
