By Christian von Preysing A new shelter will be added by the beginning of next year to Laredo's downtown Bethany House. The center for hope is set to finish by mid January and will add ten beds for women and nine transitional dorms for families. Currently the Bethany House is home to a number of family dorms, an emergency men's shelter, resource center and soup kitchen. According to the 2010 census 29 percent of Laredoans live in poverty -- that's compared to the national average of 14 percent. The nonprofit's director, Beatriz Saldana told us a little about the people who are homeless. She said often it's not just people on the street, but also those bunking with family or doubling up in a hotel. To help out Bethany House as they make room for more beds their director is asking in particular for linens and toiletries that really help out.
