City Animal Shelter One Step Closer to Completion

The city is one step closer to having their own animal shelter Monday, as city council approved over a million dollars for phase two of the city's shelter.
$1.4 million will now be used for what the city is calling 'phase two' of the animal shelter project.
The money will be used to build 120 kennels and an asphalt parking lot, in hopes of opening the shelter up to the public soon.
(Mayor): "I think the important thing is were looking forward to people coming to this shelter and adopting these animals. I don't want one single animal to be put to sleep."
Completion date for this project is scheduled for July of 2013, but city officials said they hope to operate out of phase one as soon as possible.
"We want to make sure we do it right, and we're efficient but we provide the service our four legged friends deserve."
City manager Carlos Villarreal said they are also expecting to get a spay and neuter clinic at the new shelter and said he just spoke to state representatives Monday about bringing in students from College Station.
"Hopefully we can have some third and fourth year vet students come in and do some spay and neutering and that will be an additional aspect we'll add to the program itself."
Council awarded the contract to Vision Construction Company Monday and said the $1.4 million is available in the capital improvement fund.
