High school football is finally here, but one local team is left without their regular practice field to play on.
A local father said the project is far behind and is concerned for the players and the tax payer.
(Remy Salinas): "It's a field house and a field. To me, it's not a whole lot of work. You do some ground work, you lay in the sprinklers, you lay the track and you lay the sod and turn on the water."
The Bulldogs are well known across Laredo for their football powerhouse, but construction has left Alexander without their normal practice field.
(Coach Joel Lopez): "We knew about the completion dates, we knew it was going to be late in October and all those things so we kind of felt like we got to make some adjustments and we got to be the best at it."
(Salinas): "It's my understanding that this field here at Alexander was suppose to be completed before school in time for the football team to start practicing for this season and from what I understand, it's not going to be complete until November."
Students are practicing at the newly renovated Krueger field and Salinas is concerned the new location and new practice hours could affect students.
"Some of these students have the opportunity to get Division I football scholarships and anything that affects their performance, affects the teams performance through the season could affect their opportunities for scholarships. And it may not be important to the construction company, it may not be important to the board but to these kids and their parents, it's everything."
Leyendecker construction, the same company working on Uni-Trade stadium, is in charge of the project. Our phone calls went unreturned today and Salinas wants answers.
"It's concerning that these construction companies that are in charge of the project can't stay on schedule for whatever reason. I'm sure they have excuses, like they always do. But I just want some answers."
A field house, a 6,000-foot weight room and a track with a football field is what this will be once construction is complete.
Head Coach Lopez said he understood back in March that the project wasn't going to be completed until late October and started making practice arrangements then.
He said practicing on the new turf field can be positive for the players and said the team will not suffer.
"When the whistle blows at the beginning of practice, we still get the same work-out, we'll be alright."
