Annual Police Report Says Crime Down

Even tough many across the state and country associate Laredo with the border violence in our sister city, the truth is it's one of the safest cities in the nation.
A report just out by the Laredo Police Department is shedding light on crime in our city and the numbers are looking good.
This years “Safety Report,” published by the Police Department was released today.
It's a document compiling last year's crime from, petty theft to murder and like 2010 and 2011 the crime rate last year was relatively low.
Investigator Joe Baeza said, "I think overwhelmingly the report indicates they were able to reduce crime, additionally this year."
Maintaining that level of security is due partly from help from local, state and federal agencies; overall, making 2012 a low-crime rate year.
As crime escalates across the border many that aren't from around South Texas may get a different impression about Laredo.
Especially if you watch shows like border wars or border town Laredo.
"These programs were an avenue to show people at an international level what is is we are doing as a border community about the drugs that go through here and going to the northern states," but Baeza says the shows aren't a reflection of the everyday life of a Laredoan.
"It's not the culmination of everything that is Laredo, if you watch the program thinking this is the only thing that defines us then theres a huge gap."
Baeza says, the proof is in the report and hopes that this year the police can get more involved in educating the public on how to better defend themselves against crime.
