Former constable sentenced to five years for drug smuggling bribes

By KGNS News

A former constable along the Texas border has received a five-year federal prison sentence for accepting bribes to help smuggle drugs.

A federal judge in Laredo sentenced former Webb County constable
Eduardo Garcia on Thursday, more than four months after he pleaded
guilty.

A U.S. attorney's statement says the 20-year law enforcement veteran twice took $500 bribes to help people whom Garcia thought were drug traffickers. Prosecutors say Garcia's contact was actually a confidential source working with federal agents.

Garcia could have received up to 20 years in prison.
