Grief Support Offered in Laredo

By KGNS News

It's something no mother ever wants to go through, losing their own child.
That's what happened to Elizabeth Alonzo the day before Thanksgiving of 2011, when her son was working, delivering a last minute pizza and was T-boned when a driver failed to stop at a red light.
Now, Alonzo finds comfort in the grief support group.
"We all have something in common, we lost somebody very dear to us and even if we have support from family and friends, sometimes it’s good to participate in some of these groups."
Offered by the University of Texas Health Science Center, the group meets once a month here in Laredo to provide group support for those in pain because they lost a love one.
This class was originally offered for those who donate to the science center, but is now open to anyone in the community.
"They make a decision at the end of life to give life to others in very critical times. As a gift, their gift, we want to offer bereavement support so we thought we would do monthly grief support workshops."
Alonzo said she hopes those that are grieving will come to these workshops for help because these workshops help give her strength.
"It really has. We don't only talk, we do arts and crafts, we listen to music, we write. It's been very helpful."
This support group is held at the Laredo public library.
The next workshop will be held March 19 and will discuss using creative arts to heal and remember.
