Investigators looking into the fire at Nixon High School have concluded it was intentionally set.
The fire broke out early Friday morning in a portable classroom building located on the school's west side. The portable classrooms were recently installed in preparation for the reconstruction of the 50-year-old campus. Fire officials say they are now working closely with Laredo i-s-d District Police in a joint criminal investigation to identify persons of interest. Security cameras captured video of individuals at the scene of the fire, and officials are now working on identifying those involved.
In a statement from Nixon High School's Principal, Dr. Gerardo Cruz, he says "we are disappointed that our school suffered such serious vandalism. However, we are grateful to the Laredo Fire Department for their quick response and we are happy that this setback did not involve any harm to our students, staff, or members of our community."
The Laredo i-s-d Campus Crimestoppers program is now offering a $200 reward for any information leading to the arrest of those individuals involved. The number to call is 744-0083.
