Hostage Situation Ends with One Fatality; Hostage Released

By KGNS News

The woman who walked into the Texas Human Services building on Casa Blanca Road off Saunders, demanding to meet with a supervisor has died of a self-inflicted gun shot. However, not before turning the gun on her two children and shooting them as well.

The incident began at about 5:00 PM, Monday afternoon, when the 38 year old woman walked into the Health and Human Services building, demanding to see a supervisor. When the supervisor arrived, she pulled out a gun and took him hostage. Everyone else evacuated the building by El Metro buses and the area was cleared of passersby, including an auto sales business next door. The woman remained in the building armed with the gun barricading herself with her two children. After several hours of negotiations, she finally released the hostage at about 8:00 PM, but remained inside with her two children, a boy aged 10, and a girl aged 12. At about 2:00 AM Tuesday morning, the woman shot the two children and then turned the gun on herself. She died at the scene. Investigator Joe Baeza, with the Laredo Police Department, tells us the boy was flown to a San Antonio hospital, while the girl remained at the Laredo Medical Center, as doctors tried to stabilize her to try and prepare her for a life flight to San Antonio. Details on the woman's motives are still being investigated, but Officer Baeza said she had apparently been denied help from the department.

We'll be following this tragic story throughout the day with an update on the condition of the children.
