How to be Prepared for Emergencies

By KGNS News

With fire season and hurricane season underway, the Red Cross shares advice for those who may find themselves in an emergency.

We spoke with the South Texas Regional Services Director to remind the public of what they must do if they ever find themselves in the midst of a disaster. Jack Pike advises: "If they're going to have to evacuate, they should have a disaster kit already put together. Most people would take maybe a change of clothing, water, of course, liquid food, like peaches or pears, or something like that because then you get a liquid in and food. Also, medication, because if you have to go to a Red Cross shelter, our nurses don't have the ability to authorize a prescription; they can refill prescriptions. But it's a lot of things people don't necessarily think about."

Some tips the Red Cross provided to prepare for a disaster, is to prepare a kit in case of emergencies, including water, non-perishable goods, cash and important documents. Also, develop a household plan including the safety of pets, and stay informed of how to contact local authorities in case of a disaster.
