LISD Classes Could Get More Students

Some schools in LISD could soon be in for a change.
Our Lauren Kendrick has that story.
It's not just here in Laredo, but the whole state that could be affected as the result of less funds available for schools.
The result is possibly having larger class sizes.
We spoke to a teacher at Macdonell Elementary to get her thoughts.
Kids in this classroom are busy doing school work.
From backpacks to school supplies, the room could get a bit more crowded.
According to LISD, it is exploring options to put more kids in classrooms in grades kindergarten through fourth.
"It's going to be difficult."
Macdonell Elementary third grade teacher Gilda Martinez spoke to us about the possibility.
She said she's heard that if it goes through, there could be 26 students in her classroom.
"You think it's only one more, but one more is a lot."
Right now there are 25 students in this third grade classroom and if it's up to Ms. Martinez, it will stay that way.
"It's my opinion...I don't believe it's a good idea to increase the ratio. I believe that already 25 is a lot."
In her classroom, we observed Ms. Martinez teaching a small group of her students while the rest of the class was doing work on their own.
"Other groups are doing a learning center with fluency or reading and so on."
With standards being raised regarding expectations of testing scores, Ms. Martinez says larger classes will not help with increasing students' scores.
"The smaller the classroom, the better quality instruction the students will receive."
Again, no decisions have been made.
The item is on the agenda for the school board meeting scheduled on October 11th.
