The L.I.S.D. school board decided to make a big purchase of real estate. Now all that's left is the plan on how to use the newly purchased facility. The Civic Center, Veterans Field and the Civic Center Pool were all purchased by the district and while the superintendent says L.I.S.D. already conducts several activities there weekly. Now the district can have a permanent home. L.I.S.D. Superintendent, Dr. Nelson, said “making a purchase like this is significant and we want to use the facility every day I can tell you we have a host of activities that our kids perform and compete everything from one act U.I.L. to choir to band so we are going to get full use of it." The district has proposed paying the city 16 million dollars for the civic center. They hope to be able to make the transaction in two installments. One of 14 million dollars and the second for two million. Some Laredans say they hope the funds are being used wisely. "we need to make sure we have the funds in order to spend the funds otherwise what are we doing, is it for pleasure or the benefit of Laredo." While others say its about time L.I.S.D. made the purchase. "I personally think if LISD is able to purchase the Civic Center I think it's a good investment because it's going to bring revenue for the city." Another person adds, “it's about time they get that whole place there Martins right next to it they should have got it for a cheaper price but politics play around." "one option would be for us to go and build a new facility but it would be more expensive then what we are doing here." The addition of a pool the superintendent says will bring learn to swim classes and the development of a swim team. The district also suggests a joint management arrangement with the city in running the civic center pool.
