Laredo Red Cross Wants You!

By KGNS News

A city without volunteers is unprepared. That's what the Laredo Red Cross is urging today, as they encourage people to have a plan in case of natural disasters.

They held a special presentation Saturday morning at the Laredo Public Library. They went over the importance of volunteers during emergencies, especially those that require evacuations like those seen during Hurricane Katrina.

Laredo Red Cross Branch Manager Isela Sanchez, explains how vital volunteers become in a worst case scenario. "We need volunteers during this temporary season. Especially because Laredo is also a host city. If a hurricane happens in the Valley, we will be hosting 5,000 people from the Valley here in Laredo. They will be setting up shelters here in Laredo."

Currently, the Laredo Red Cross only has about 100 volunteers, that's only about 1/5 of what is needed. If you are interested in answering the call and becoming a volunteer, they are willing to invest time providing free training. To register, sign up online at www.saredcross.org. You'll find information under the 'volunteer' tab seen on the home page.
