Laredoans React To New Pope

The Vatican had hoped to have a new pope in place by Easter, and they were able to stick to that time line.
Our Lauren Kendrick went out into the community and joins us now with their thoughts.
People we spoke with say they are happy to have a leader for the catholic church.
Right here in Laredo, people are even more happy with a pope from South America.
It's only been a day since the archbishop of Buenos Aires stepped out on the balcony of the Vatican and the world was introduced to the new Pope.
"Yes, excited and surprised. That was quick. I'm kind of happy about the fact that he's from South America."
Rodriguez says he wants to see some changes in the church, mainly with more women.
"Hopefully, they come up to what is happening today and still not living so far behind."
Someone else was talked with says he's not catholic. His fiance is and was closely watching the announcement.
"She's extremely happy with the selection."
He also joined in watching the coverage and shares his thoughts.
"He's considered something of a rising star."
While there is a lot of hype about him being a Latin Pope from South America, one man we spoke with says that's not important to him. He is more concerned about the job he will do as Pope, saying he is much different than the popes in the past.
"I think it's a good thing that we have a new Pope, especially that he is so pius. he has such a love for the people."
Pope Francis is known for being down to earth. Riding he bus to work, and even cooking his own meals.
"You can truly see that he cares for the church, the people, and that he really does want to do the will of God."
Latin America accounts for 40% of all Roman Catholics.
Pope Francis was close to be elected pope back in 2005, gaining he second highest vote total in several rounds before bowing out of the running.
