This week marks hunger and homelessness awareness week in Laredo.
And today people took part in an annual march to get others talking about the issue.
Inspired by a prayer dozens of people took to the streets of downtown Laredo to bring awareness to hunger and homelessness.
“We want to come here because we know this is a very pressing issue in the community.”
“This is a population that greatly needs our support.”
Crowds marched on to send a message about compassion.
“Many of us see the homeless and see them as a nuisance instead of seeing them as a person and what their situation may be and how they ended up in that type of reality.”
many of the people walking here say that we all have to realize that many of us are one step away from being homeless or hungry ourselves.
Sudden unemployment or illness, they say, can change a life.
“For us to come to the realization to come to those in need because it may come a time when we end up in that situation.”
organizers of this event say the general Laredo population isn't aware of just how great the need is.
The Bethany house serves an estimated 300,000 meals each year to those in need.
Their goal today: to get people listening and lending a hand.
“its important that we came together as a community that we find out how to serve them as best as we can.”
This is the 8th year for the march.
It's organized by the Laredo homeless coalition and includes several agencies from across the city.
