New Police Chief Ray Garner Shares Plans For New Position

UISD Police Chief, Ray Garner, is no stranger to the law enforcement field. While presenting to members of city council, he told them the future plans he has for Laredo Police Department and talked about knowledge of the culture and history of Laredo.
"I felt really confident going in. I felt good after I left, and then obviously I got the unanimous vote to be the chief of police for the city of Laredo."
He says once his name was announced, people in the city hall chambers started congratulating him.
"It took a couple of minutes for it to soak in. i heard my name. i heard the vote and it just took a little bit of time to soak in."
The new chief of police says after he left, he went to church to say a quick prayer and give thanks. Then he went home to his biggest supporters.
"When I got to the house, my wife had tears in her eyes. my daughter who's 16 came running up, and finally my son came out of his room and stopped playing x-box. They all had tears in their eyes."
Garner explains they were tears of joy because his family knew how bad he wanted this and how hard he had worked for it during his 40 years of law enforcement, many of those years spent training current police officers.
"Ninety percent have come through some type of training that I gave when I was at the academy."
"Garner says he wants to be a hands on police chief by riding in patrol cars with the police officer."
"Police officers do a lot of talking in their little world which is their patrol unit and they'll open up."
Garner also wants to hear from the residents of Laredo.
"My biggest idea is to get with the community, find out what fears and hopes they have."
He says he plans to have an open door policy and be accessible to everyone.
