Officials say there's been a major increase in homeless veterans over the last decade; however, those in Laredo will soon have a place to find comfort with a new veterans transitional home soon in our city.
The South Texas Afghanistan Iraq Veterans Association is on track to unveil a multi-million dollar transitional home project for war veterans. president of the association, Gabriel Lopez, says, “This transitional home would have a dual purpose which means it would house the older generation of Vietnam vets and possibly Korean war vets and also to assist the returning veterans.” With this 2.8 million dollar center, located in south Laredo in the Cielito Lindo Subdivision, the increasing amount of homeless veterans would also have somewhere to go.
It's something one of the board members, who is a former Vietnam War veteran, feels many should also support. Board member, Juan Garza, says, “What made me get involved was I served in the US Department of Veterans Affairs as an advocate for war veterans' rights. I traveled the country and saw the needs of all walks of life, and like I said, I traveled.” He says that although most of the costs for the center are covered, there are still hundreds of thousands of dollars needing to be raised for the center.
Garza and one active Commissioner involved say they would like to see the community involved as much as possible. Also, they can see the prospective Casa del Veteranos become a reality for those who served our country. Unveiling for the veteran’s center is set to take place next Wednesday with a formal public announcement.
