It’s a story we first brought you last week and now we have new video that shows the life-saving efforts of local police officers. The incident happened last Monday off Mines Road as officers investigated a minor collision. But what would happen next saved a little girl's life. Annette Garcia has the story. This police dash cam video shows it all. An officer patrol car leaves the scene of a minor accident on Mines road when suddenly, an emergency. “I was in a totally different scenario in the car accident. I was not expecting it at all.” A suburban quickly pulls over and a frantic mother jumps out with her nine-year-old daughter in her arms. The little girl is choking on a piece of candy and already turning purple. Officers Alberto Tijerina and Gerardo Dimas spring into action, performing the Heimlich maneuver on the child and trying to clear her airway. Finally, after several attempts the girl is finally able to drink water and swallows the candy. “The mother was hysterical and panicked and it’s understandable. Her reaction was to drive to the hospital. The two hospitals are quite far. Thank God we were there to help the child.” Officers can’t imagine what would have happened had five more minutes gone by. “Only God knows that.” And if this story wasn't amazing enough, here is something else. Officer Tijerina has actually saved the life of a child before. Last year a little boy was found unresponsive at the bottom of a pool. Officer Tijerina brought him back to life.” “It feels great that I’ve been able to help them out.” But Tijerina and Dimas say they were only doing their job and were simply at the right place at the right time. “It’s our duty. It's what we do everyday, what all police officers do everyday.” The little girl who was saved and her mother were not able to attend today's recognition ceremony but have told police they are extremely grateful for what officers did. Officials tell us the girl and her mother will be at Tuesday’s City Council meeting to say thank you to the officers.
