Over $6.2M Worth of Marijuana Seized by Border Patrol Agents

By KGNS News

On December 5, Laredo West agents seized a significant amount of marijuana and arrested one subject.

Laredo West agents performing line watch duties encountered a 1995 White Mack tractor-trailer, pulling a large cylinder and oil field pipe, exiting a ranch. As agents approached the tractor-trailer, they noticed several discrepancies that raised their suspicion. Agents waited for the tractor-trailer to exit the ranch, and proceeded to conduct an immigration stop. As the agents questioned the driver on his citizenship and destination, he stated that it was his first day on the job and proceeded to hand over some hand written notes to the agent about his destination. At this time, the agents requested assistance from a service canine in order to perform a cursory search which shortly after, resulted on a positive alert.

The driver, identified as a 63- year old male U.S. Citizen from Puerto Rico, was subsequently transported to the Camino Colombia Bridge for further questioning and inspection of the tractor-trailer. While at the bridge, agents performed an x-ray scan of the trailer where several anomalies were discovered within the trailer portion. Due to the confined space and complex manner in which the narcotics were concealed, contractors were utilized to extract the narcotics from the trailer. Once the narcotics were unloaded and after a physical inspection, a total of 463 bundles encased in cellophane wrapping tested positive for marijuana. The contraband weighed 7,801.05 pounds and has a street value of $6,240.840.00 USD.

The narcotics, vehicle and subject were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
