Plans for San Ygnacio dumpsite scrapped

By KGNS News

Residents of San Ygnacio are celebrating a victory after Texas Energy opts to withdraw an application to expand a dumpsite near the small Zapata County town.

A large company proposed to create a dumpsite less than a mile from San Ygnacio to dispose of oil field waste.

Residents, county officials, and environmental groups came together to oppose the proposal, and at a town hall meeting Monday evening, their wish was granted.

In front of a crowd of 200 to 250 concerned citizens, the head of Texas Energy announced he would be withdrawing the application to open the dumpsite, citing the overwhelming opposition from residents of Zapata County and surrounding areas.

Those who worked to fight the proposal say it was a very welcome announcement.

The Rio Grande International Study Center, the River Pierce Foundation, along with the support of Zapata County leaders, were behind the push to keep the dump site out.
